The biggest topic for farmers these days is "trees". A new policy is coming down the pipeline for our region. Cambridge has already implemented it. The cities are working toward a 30% tree coverage in the region by the year 2050. This is in compliance with the United Nations sustainable goal #15 from the City of Kitchener's strategic plan 2023-26. In order to achieve this, control over the trees on private property must take place because roughly 50% of the trees in the region are on private property. Authority has been given to by-law to enforce the new standards.
The new policies will enforce what, where and how many trees will be allowed to be cut down. Replacement tree policies are also being implemented. These changes will be costs that are added to the farmer or homeowner. As of now, properties of more than 1 acre will be expected to comply with the new policies.
The public may not even realize this is happening. If you call an arbourist to cut down a tree, the fee may not specify these changes that the company is expected to pass onto the customer. The customer may just notice it is expensive.
